Jonathan Levineâs loosely-biographical film is funny. Really funny. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a young cancer patient and Seth Rogen as his vulgar best friend, itâs a heart-warming film about a difficult topic. Clueless Ah, the coming-of-age drama. Starring Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd, adolescence never seemed so fabulous, or iconic. Amy Heckerlingâs film gives you a taste of the good life â" and everything in between. Sing Street John Carneyâs comedy-drama slipped under the radar last year â" more fool everyone. Sing Street was one a nostalgic triumph and one of 2016âs best. Set in 1985 and fully immersed in the sounds of the era â" Duran Duran, The Jam, The Cure â" the Dublin-set film is a musical joy. Areas for Job Interview Improvement Here is my list of top interviewing areas for improvement that you can identify and work on to dramatically improve your interview skills. Work on this list now so that when the big interview approaches, you are ready. Long Monologues answers that go on to long and lack structure. Eye Contact Avoidance not commanding attention from the interviewer sufficiently through eye contact. Weak Endings giving a great initial answer but not knowing how to end your statement. Excessive Filler Words too many distracting filler words (um, like, kind of, etc.). Tangents answering the question but going off on tangents so the interviewer is unable to follow you. Not Answering the Question great replies but ones that donât help the interviewer. Personal Ticks Annoying personal habits that distract the interviewer. Preparing with Mock Job Interviews How do you know what your areas for improvement are? Conduct a mock interview. You can do this with a friend, family member, or career professional to get some feedback. One of my favorite parts of my job is conducting video-taped mock interviews. Rarely does anyone like to see themselves on tape, however, this is a great way for you to see first-hand how you answer questions and what, if any, areas you need to improve. The videotape gives you a starting point for your interviewing skills level. Work on the skills you want to improve and then videotape a second interview. You can visually see the results of your hard work and build confidence. Interviews can seem overwhelming but with focused and repetitive practice you can improve quickly. Use the mock interview or, even better, a video-taped mock interview as part of this practice to visually track your results. How to make yourself indispensable at work - When you look around your office, you probably see people you could manage without. And maybe youre asking yourself, How essential am I at work? This is a good time to assess your contribution to the organization. Ask yourself these questions to help determine how valuable you are to your workplace: 1. Do you contribute to the bottom line? If youre generating income, especially if you are exceeding expectations, you arent likely to be the first one out the door. Of course, most people are not in a sales or income-generating role. Alternatively, do your ideas generate income? Can you point to problems youve solved that saved money for your employer? Do you create systems or implement policies that enhance your organizations ability to be competitive? These are probably the next best thing to actually bringing income in when it comes to a loose definition of essential. 2. Are you easy to get along with? This is subjective, but it can become a factor for organizations without rigid guidelines determining who stays in a layoff and who goes. Plays well with others, or having soft skills may as well be on every job description, as there isnt an employer out there who doesnt want to employ people who know how to get along with colleagues. Do you wonder why someone who is failing at the job and cant seem to get a thing done manages to stick around while more capable people are let go? It could be that he has a great attitude, is positive in the face of adversity and doesnt cause trouble. Bonus points if he also gets along well with the boss. 3. Are you handy? Roll your eyes if you will, but no one wants to let go of the person who knows how to fix the printer every time it goes down or comes to the rescue when the copier needs some TLC. Problem solvers are in demand. If youre the one everyone calls on whenever theres a challenge â" big or small â" you may have the golden ticket at work. 4. Are you well networked? Granted, this may be more prized at some jobs than others, but as we engage in a more global workplace, your ability to meet and get to know people who may be very different from you can help you win valuable bonus points at the office. Its been said, its all who you know, and its possible, in some cases, that who you know can actually help you keep your job. 5. Does anyone know what you do? We all know the strong, but silent types who trudge along and get the important work done behind the scenes. Unfortunately, if youre great at your job, but no one is likely to know it, you probably arent high on the must keep list at work. Think about this age-old question: If a tree falls in a forest when no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? If your skills and work ethic are akin to the falling tree â" no one hears you or knows what you do, its time to start making some noise. You dont need to call yourself a parade or throw streamers every time you accomplish something, but it isnt a bad idea to send information up the management chain when you solve a problem or handle a significant situation. How to Avoid Work Distractions Thereâs a disturbance in the workforceâ"a lot of them, actually. You know the ones: the persistent ding of social media alerts, the unending stream of âurgentâ emails, the cubicle mate who conducts every call on speakerphone ⦠How can we get any work done with so many distractions afoot? The answer is that most of us arenât accomplishing as much as we could be. Research from the University of California, Irvine, found that the typical office worker spends only 11 minutes on a task before getting interrupted or abandoning it for another project. And once workflow has been disrupted, it can take about 23 minutes to get back on track, explains professor Gloria Mark, who led the study. To help you out, we asked productivity experts to share their tricks for regaining focus and keeping time bandits at bay.Even if youâre distracted right now, youâll definitely want to pay attention to their tips! Productivity Killer: Your Colleagues Every office has âem: the chatty Charlies who pop by to ask a âquickâ questionâ"but then linger for the next 30 minutes to give you a run-down of last nightâs episode of âThe Bachelor.â Add the time spent socializing to the 23 minutes itâll take you to refocus after each distraction, and you could potentially lose several hours of productivity. Focus Fix #1: Take a Standâ"Literally When colleagues drop by your desk to ask a question, get up to talk to them, recommends Cathy Sexton, a productivity strategist, author and founder of The Productivity Experts. The reason? Itâs much easier to cut the conversation short when youâre standing than it is after they get comfortable, Sexton explains. Focus Fix #2: Play Hard to Get Occasionally hanging a simple âdo not disturbâ sign can speak volumes to would-be chatters. Also look at how you might be contributing to the interruptions. If you have a candy jar on your desk, youâre begging for a constant stream of sugar-seeking visitors. Hide those treats in your desk instead, or ditch them entirely. Focus Fix #3: Combine Your Conversations Even when your distractions are truly work-relatedâ"such as emails and surprise meetingsâ"you can still take control of your time. Author Maura Thomas, founder ofRegainYourTime.com, suggests using a âTalk toâ list to eliminate constant back-and-forth email chains and cut impromptu drop-ins. âWhen you have a lot of recurring interactions with someone, like a colleague or your boss, you often think of things that you want or need to share with that person,â she says. âRather than emailing every time you think of something, create a âTalk toâ list for that person.â That means batching several of your questions, to-dos and talking points into one email instead of sending them piecemeal. Be sure to number your tasks in a prioritized list for fast and easy communication and to ensure the recipient addresses every part of the message. Then ask that your colleagues do the same for you. âIf the other person has a list for you, as well, this process results in very effective and less disruptive communication,â Thomas adds. And if a pop-up meeting does have to happen, ask your colleague when they can meet and how long theyâll need. Then schedule it on both of your calendars so youâre in control of your own time, advises Sexton. It turns out half of the time, weâre interrupting ourselves. Whether struggling with an Instagram addiction or just feeling overwhelmed by an overpacked schedule, it can be very easy to get off track. Fortunately there are things you can do to help keep your attention where it needs it to be. Focus Fix #4: Choose Your Background Noise According to the International Facility Management Association, about 70% of U.S. offices have adopted some type of open floor plan, with many believing the layout would foster collaboration and communication. For many workers, however, the open office just created less privacy and more disruptions. âAcademic researchâ"and a mountain of anecdotal evidenceâ"shows open offices inhibit productivity and creative thinking and can damage the attention span of workers,â says Thomas. âSome research shows it isnât the open office itself that is the problem; rather its execution is to blame.â If you find yourself getting distracted by some of your colleaguesâ noisy quirks, both Thomas and Sexton recommend grabbing your headphones and turning on some tunes via the Focus@Will app and website to dampen some of the office noise. The specialized music service features a library of instrumental pieces programmed to help soothe the limbic system (the part of the brain that controls basic emotions and drives) to continuously tune out external stimuli in 100-minute increments. Focus Fix #5: Give Multitasking a Miss Whether youâre popping between projects every few minutes or taking a work call while checking your Twitter feed, your common multitasking behaviors may be severely hampering your productivity. Experts say that single-tasking is a better way to go and that it can not only help you get more done, it can also make you sharper and smarter. A single-tasking strategy motivates you to attend to your priorities and it can also help ease stress. âThink small,â Thomas says. âYou donât have to persuade yourself to do everything on your to-do list; you only have to persuade yourself to do the next thing. Once youâve selected a task to tackle, close everything else and just do that.â And as a rule, Sexton advises including no more than three priority tasks total on your daily to-do list to help you stay on track even if you get interrupted. But studies have shown that focus, like our physical endurance, is a limited resource. Thatâs why as the brain works harder to complete attention-draining tasks, weâre more likely to be distractedâ"itâs an energy-saving mechanism to reserve mental strength. Most people can only work for about 90 minutes before their productive energy levels start dropping, says Sexton. When this happens, it helps to take a mental break to recharge and refocus. But instead of reaching for your phone or tablet, Thomas suggests simply letting your mind wander. âYour brain needs quiet time to make connections and generate insights,â she says. âWhat we need is often just a little idle time.â This idle time can be as simple as sitting back in your chair, closing your eyes for a few seconds and thinking about something pleasant, Sexton adds. So if you think youâre getting more done by tacking on an extra 15 hours to your regular work week, think again. Research shows clocking in for longer periods of time doesnât actually make you an all-star workerâ"instead, productivity drops off at about 50 hours per week. And putting in an inordinate amount of overtime on a regular basis can lead to additional stress, sleep deprivation, burnout and a slew of health issues. While navigating distractions and learning how to refocus can help reboot your productivity, thereâs also the acceptance that you wonât get as much done in a day as you think you will. âWhile everyone would like a magic bullet, there really isnât one,â says Thomas. âAccepting the reality of the situation can go a long way toward relieving your stress â¦. The best thing you can do for your work is not work.â
