Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Cross-Company Innovation Addresses the Changing Nature of Work As a long-time partner of Staples and Xerox, I just traveled to New York City to spend National Small Business Week with the two organizations, learning how they’re helping small business customers and entrepreneurs be more productive with the new multi-function self-serve machines in Staples stores across the country. By 2030, more than half of American professionals will no longer go to an office every day. Getting simple things done, like sending a package or printing a critical document, will not be as easy as making a few clicks and sauntering over to the mailroom. As millions of new small business owners and contract workforce pour into the workforce, they will find out exactly how difficult it is to run every aspect of a business themselves. I’ve been working with Staples and Xerox to ensure that the two businesses are ahead of this trend and ready to offer the assistance that busy professionals, operating out of a home office and via mobile devices, so desperately need. According to Amy Lang, Vice President of Print Merchandising at Staples, 18 million customers came to Staples stores last year, specifically to use Business Center services like printing. “Sometimes people have time to plan and order online; sometimes they need a document within the hour; sometimes they need help; and sometimes they want to come in and leave quickly without having to talk to anyone,” she said. “Our customers need to do their jobs, which involve thinking and doing as opposed to printing.” Xerox printers have long been a “staple” of every Staples store’s Business Center, in the past, Xerox would simply send new products to Staples stores for employees to plug in and for customers to use. But Staples realized the value of tapping Xerox in advance to develop a machine that would address the changing needs of its customers. Here’s what’s fascinating: you don’t usually see two large companies coming together to innovate on a solution that doesn’t yet exist. But that’s exactly what happened. Staples and Xerox combined their understanding of the customer, with Xerox’s constantly improving technology, to transform the Business Center experience from the ground up. “The goal was to design the machine to be intuitive to use for anyone walking up to it for the first time,” said Renee Carter, Vice President of Mid-Products for Xerox. When Staples and Xerox finished their creation, they sent 3,000 of the new devices to Staples stores. The new MFPs have an interface that looks like a tablet and allows customers to print or scan from the cloud, usb, mobile device, and email. They have bar code readers to enable coupons and credit card readers so that people can pay without going to the counter. The MFPs are also future-proofed, meaning they are pre-configured with additional apps and functions that Staples customers may well demand soon. Not only are the MFPs fully upgraded, but they save customers a tremendous amount of time and help them achieve productivity and results normally reserved for corporate employees. And THIS is a change that is bound to benefit everyone as the nature of work continues to evolve.

He identifies as a New Zealander, but he does hold British citizenship. That’s enough for me. In Hunt for the Wilderpeople, the Jurassic Park actor has never been better. Starring alongside newcomer Julian Dennison, the duo tackle love, loneliness and companionship with hilarious verve. 50/50 A film about cancer? Hear us out. Jonathan Levine’s loosely-biographical film is funny. Really funny. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a young cancer patient and Seth Rogen as his vulgar best friend, it’s a heart-warming film about a difficult topic. Clueless Ah, the coming-of-age drama. Starring Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd, adolescence never seemed so fabulous, or iconic. Amy Heckerling’s film gives you a taste of the good life â€" and everything in between. Sing Street John Carney’s comedy-drama slipped under the radar last year â€" more fool everyone. Sing Street was one a nostalgic triumph and one of 2016’s best. Set in 1985 and fully immersed in the sounds of the era â€" Duran Duran, The Jam, The Cure â€" the Dublin-set film is a musical joy. You’ll download the soundtrack before the credits have even rolled. Good Will Hunting This isn’t just a film you should watch to pick you up â€" this is a film to watch at any given moment. The making of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck is a masterful hybrid of coming-of-age drama, romance, social commentary and emotional comedy. There is, naturally, a lot of pressure during interviews, knowing what is at stake. There is also the pressure we put on ourselves. Maybe this is your dream job or maybe you are unemployed and really need this job. The interview environment itself can be intimidating: a small room with, potentially, several people looking at you and writing down what you say, and some interviewers may never even crack a smile! All of these things can make us feel less sure of ourselves and wish we had better interviewing skills. I truly believe that interviewing is a learned skill and not innate. Yes, there are individuals who seem more ‘natural’ at interviewing, but with enough work everyone can dramatically improve their skills. Now is the time to asses your interview skills! Areas for Job Interview Improvement Here is my list of top interviewing areas for improvement that you can identify and work on to dramatically improve your interview skills. Work on this list now so that when the big interview approaches, you are ready. Long Monologues answers that go on to long and lack structure. Eye Contact Avoidance not commanding attention from the interviewer sufficiently through eye contact. Weak Endings giving a great initial answer but not knowing how to end your statement. Excessive Filler Words too many distracting filler words (um, like, kind of, etc.). Tangents answering the question but going off on tangents so the interviewer is unable to follow you. Not Answering the Question great replies but ones that don’t help the interviewer. Personal Ticks Annoying personal habits that distract the interviewer. Preparing with Mock Job Interviews How do you know what your areas for improvement are?  Conduct a mock interview. You can do this with a friend, family member, or career professional to get some feedback. One of my favorite parts of my job is conducting video-taped mock interviews. Rarely does anyone like to see themselves on tape, however, this is a great way for you to see first-hand how you answer questions and what, if any, areas you need to improve. The videotape gives you a starting point for your interviewing skills level. Work on the skills you want to improve and then videotape a second interview. You can visually see the results of your hard work and build confidence. Interviews can seem overwhelming but with focused and repetitive practice you can improve quickly. Use the mock interview or, even better, a video-taped mock interview as part of this practice to visually track your results. Identify the areas from my list that you need to work on and soon you will be a “natural” at interviewing! How to make yourself indispensable at work - When you look around your office, you probably see people you could manage without. And maybe youre asking yourself,  How essential am  I  at work? This is a good time to assess your contribution to the organization. Ask yourself these questions to help determine how  valuable  you are to your workplace: 1. Do you contribute to the bottom line? If youre generating income, especially if you are exceeding expectations, you arent likely to be the first one out the door. Of course, most people are not in a sales or income-generating role. Alternatively, do your ideas generate income? Can you point to problems youve solved that saved money for your employer? Do you create systems or implement policies that enhance your organizations ability to be competitive? These are probably the next best thing to actually bringing income in when it comes to a loose definition of essential. 2. Are you easy to get along with?   This is subjective, but it can become a factor for organizations without rigid guidelines determining who stays in a layoff and who goes. Plays well with others, or having soft skills may as well be on every job description, as there isnt an employer out there who doesnt want to employ people who know how to get along with colleagues. Do you wonder why someone who is  failing at the job  and cant seem to get a thing done manages to stick around while more capable people are let go? It could be that he has a great attitude, is positive in the face of adversity and doesnt cause trouble. Bonus points if he also gets along well with the boss. 3. Are you handy?   Roll your eyes if you will, but no one wants to let go of the person who knows how to fix the printer every time it goes down or comes to the rescue when the copier needs some TLC. Problem solvers are in demand. If youre the one everyone calls on whenever theres a challenge â€" big or small â€" you may have the golden ticket at work. 4. Are you well  networked?   Granted, this may be more prized at some jobs than others, but as we engage in a more global workplace, your ability to meet and get to know people who may be very different from you can help you win valuable bonus points at the office. Its been said, its all who you know, and its possible, in some cases, that who you know can actually help you keep your job. 5. Does anyone know what you do?   We all know the strong, but silent types who trudge along and get the important work done behind the scenes. Unfortunately, if youre great at your job, but no one is likely to know it, you probably arent high on the must keep list at work. Think about this age-old question: If a tree falls in a forest when no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? If your skills and work ethic are akin to the falling tree â€" no one hears you or knows what you do, its time to start making some noise. You dont need to call yourself a parade or throw streamers every time you accomplish something, but it isnt a bad idea to send information up the management chain when you solve a problem or handle a significant situation.
